New Technology for Wastewater Treatment: SED Retrievable Aeration Technology

بواسطة margan December 18th, 2025 36 مشاهدات

As wastewater treatment standards become increasingly stringent, conventional aeration systems are facing growing challenges such as high energy consumption, frequent clogging, difficult maintenance, and unstable oxygen transfer efficiency. Aeration remains the most energy-intensive process in biological wastewater treatment, making innovation in aeration technology a key driver for improving system performance and reducing operational costs.

The Evolution of Aeration Technology in Wastewater Treatment

Traditional fine bubble diffusers and fixed aeration systems often suffer from membrane fouling, rising head loss, and complicated maintenance procedures that require tank drainage or shutdowns. These limitations result in higher energy demand, increased downtime, and elevated lifecycle costs.

To address these challenges, a new generation of retrievable and self-cleaning aeration technologies has emerged. Among them, SED (Soft Enhanced Diffuser) technology represents a significant advancement in fine bubble aeration systems.

SED Biological Technology: A New Generation of Aeration Solution

SED Biological technology, represented by the Retro-X® Unbeatable Aeration System, is based on an innovative aeration hose design combined with a specially formulated membrane and advanced perforation technology. Under low airflow conditions, the system produces ultra-fine bubbles with an average diameter of approximately 1 mm. These bubbles rise slowly at less than 0.4 m/s, significantly increasing gas–liquid contact time and improving oxygen transfer efficiency.

With a standard oxygen transfer efficiency (SOTE) of up to 45–48% at a water depth of 6 meters, SED technology enables wastewater treatment plants to achieve higher oxygen utilization while reducing air demand and overall energy consumption.

Key Technical Advantages of SED Aeration Technology

One of the most distinctive features of SED technology is its extremely low head loss. The membrane-only design, without internal supporting pipes, minimizes airflow resistance and allows for long-distance air transmission with stable pressure distribution.

The system is equipped with a PLC-based self-cleaning control system, which periodically regulates airflow through electric valves on the air distribution manifolds. By generating controlled airflow pulses and pressure differentials, the system automatically removes biofilm, sludge, and particulate buildup from the aeration hose surface. This ensures stable head loss, prevents clogging, and maintains consistent oxygen transfer efficiency over long-term operation.

Another major advantage is the retrievable installation design. The aeration hoses can be inspected, maintained, or replaced without draining the tank or interrupting system operation. Two operators can complete the replacement of an aeration unit in approximately 15 minutes, without cranes or lifting equipment. This significantly improves maintenance efficiency and reduces plant downtime.

In addition, SED aeration systems feature excellent mechanical and chemical durability. The membrane material offers high tear resistance, oil resistance, and strong tolerance to acids and alkalis. In municipal wastewater applications, the service life exceeds 10 years, while in industrial wastewater treatment, it typically exceeds 8 years.

Applications and Value for Wastewater Treatment Plants

SED technology is widely applied in:

  • New construction of biological treatment systems

  • Upgrades and capacity expansion of existing wastewater treatment plants

  • Energy-saving retrofits

  • Replacement of conventional aeration systems

By combining high oxygen transfer efficiency, low energy consumption, easy maintenance, and long service life, SED technology provides wastewater treatment plants with a stable, cost-effective, and future-oriented aeration solution.
