Microporous aeration discs play a key role in biological wastewater treatment systems such as the activated sludge process. Their main function is to deliver air into the water through finely perforated membranes, which helps raise dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and supports microbial activity.

Fine bubbles (less than 2mm in diameter) offer a large gas–liquid interface, which significantly boosts oxygen transfer efficiency. In actual use, transfer rates typically exceed 30%.
